Job Summary:

This Engineering intern will work at Trane for the summer semester beginning in May 2024.  Applying computational and test methods to validate and test Trane Commercial HVAC products. Scope of activities will be matched with the student's demonstrated abilities with the intent to provide an appropriate level of benefit to both the business and the individual's educational experience.  Potential focus areas include automation systems, thermodynamics, data analysis, test planning, test execution, instrumentation, and process controls.  The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on laboratory work and problem-solving in a team environment.

We’re looking for performance-driven, innovative leaders who understand the importance of collaboration and customer focus. Our 12-week summer intern program offers candidates working toward their Bachelor’s in Marketing, Acct/Fin, Supply Chain, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Human Resources, or Information Technology with exposure to a variety of assignments 

Positions are available at many of our facilities including Davidson, North Carolina, Clarksville Tn, La Crosse, Wisconsin, Annandale, New Jersey, Tyler, Texas, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mocksville, North Carolina, and Kent, Washington to name a few. 

As we hire most of our full-time positions through our intern & co-op talent, successful candidates will have an opportunity to interview for full-time positions with our post-graduate career tracks in the Accelerated Development Program, a leadership rotational program designed for the Engineering, Operations, Marketing, Acct/Fin, Human Resources, and Information Technology functions.  These assignments are strategically chosen to ensure continuous learning and personal development. 


Responsibilities: 
  • Work safely and maintain a safe work area in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Provide accurate, repeatable, and retrievable data to Test Engineering and Product Engineering Team.
  • Assist Test Engineering and other Technicians to learn and set up standard Laboratory test equipment including data acquisition systems, power analyzers, flow equipment, pressure, and temperature measurement devices and more.
  • Assist concept and validation test setups and testing with guidance from Test Engineer or Senior Technician for Trane Commercial products.
  • Assist Laboratory Test Teams in supporting project schedules and executing laboratory tasks on time
  • Assist in the fabrication, assembly and testing of prototypes and product builds.
  • Assist in the troubleshooting and repair of Trane CHVAC technologies and equipment.
  • Develop good working relationships with team members within engineering and from other departments.
  • Assemble and maintain test tools, fixtures and equipment using power hand tools, band saws, drill presses, grinders, and other related tools.
  • Provide support to maintain facilities and equipment
  • Assist continuous improvement efforts by utilizing OPEX Lean Principles including visual management and 9-step problem solving techniques.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures

Qualifications:
  • BS/BA in one of the aforementioned majors 
  • Overall 3.0 GPA or above 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills (minimum of one example in the last four years such as: school club officer, sports team captain, resident advisor, etc. or exceptional leadership of work projects) 
  • Work experiences (minimum of two functionally related internships or six months of experience, ie Co-op or work exp by graduation) 
  • Willing to be mobile and relocate anywhere in the United States 
  • Resiliency and ability to adapt quickly 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook) required, with desire to learn basic programming in Visual Basic is preferred.

  • Ability to solve basic problems and deal with a variety of complex variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as fractions/decimal relationships, algebra, and geometry. Proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume may also be included.
  • Basic level of reading and understanding of operator’s manuals and engineering drawings.
  • Ability to operate power hand tools, band saw, drill press, grinder etc. and work from lifts, scaffolds, and ladders.
  • Ability to work from daily work list and other assignments.

 Additional Information:

  • May physically lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with provided machinery and personnel.

  • While performing the duties of the Lab Engineering Intern, the employee is regularly required to sit or walk to demonstrate products; frequent use hands to reach, handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 
  • Work areas and operations require the use of safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection and other personal protective equipment (PPE) as deemed necessary. The employee will encounter routine exposure to grease, oil and cleaning agents.
