This Senior Power Electronics Engineer - Application Technical Lead is responsible for integrating variable speed drives into Trane Commercial Systems’ HVAC equipment and providing technical direction to Power Electronics Applications Team. This position is eligible for a Hybrid work schedule (3 days/week on-site) in Engineering & Technology Center located in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Core Job Responsibilities (others may be added):
- Responsible for all application aspects for power electronic devices for Trane Commercial Product manufactured in North America, including new Product Development, Lifecycle Maintenance.
- Device selection recommendations and sizing, defining device application specification, component level qualification of devices, system level qualification of devices, tuning of drive/motor pairings, and parameter settings.
- Coach, mentor, On-board and teach power electronics application team members.
- Develop standard work, standard processes, best practices.
- Serve as an SME to address complex issues in the field and factories.
- Serve as an independent reviewer for project design reviews and technical reviews.
- Qualify VFDs for use in Trane Commercial HVAC products.
- Apply variable speed drives to HVAC equipment, especially compressors and fans.
- Interface unit level controls and safety features to the drive.
- Optimize VFD cooling for product specific needs.
- Analyze motor-drive compatibility and tune the electrical system for optimal performance.
- Write specifications for electrical components in the motor-drive system.
- Conduct qualification testing of the motor-drive system.
- Provide lifecycle support of the product, including field and factory problem resolution.
- Overnight travel is required, approximately 5-10%.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and at least 7-years of variable frequency drive applications experience is required.
- Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering is a plus.

- Working knowledge of power electronics or variable speed drive applications.
- Work as part of multi-functional development team to meet overall program goals.
- Must be an effective team player with the ability to work with cross-functional or global groups.
- Ability to learn quickly.
Annual Compensation Range is $78,000 to $143,000 annually. Disclaimer: This salary range is based on US national averages. Actual pay could be a result of seniority/experience level, merit and geographic location where the actual work is performed.
