Where is the work:
This position has been designated as On-Site (5-days per week) within our Trane La Crosse campus.
Job Summary:
The Compressor Test Engineer plays a pivotal role in the development of Trane Technologies' HVAC compressor products within the engineering R&D laboratories. This position entails a comprehensive range of laboratory engineering functions, including the design and construction of new test stands, subsystem sizing, facility networking, PLC control programming, process control implementation, test planning, instrumentation, and test automation. The ideal candidate will prioritize safety and inclusion, and demonstrate proficiency in technical leadership, project management, hands-on laboratory work, and collaborative problem-solving within a team-oriented environment.
- Responsible for upgrading/building new compressor test stands and experimental bench tests.
- Lead compressor development and validation test projects.
- Oversee and optimize the capabilities of test facilities, ensuring that all equipment possesses the requisite functionality and reliability to generate high-quality data.
- Become a Subject Matter Expert on Compressor Laboratory tests.
- Design and implement advanced measurement systems for laboratory testing to ensure precision and accuracy in data collection and analysis.
- Develop expertise on advanced data acquisition systems.
- Design program control for test automation.
- Conduct research into emerging technologies for instrumentation and controls and develop innovative experimental methodologies to enhance testing capabilities.
- Collaborate extensively with laboratory technicians and product engineers.
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, and health and safety standards.
- Oversee and manage comprehensive documentation for test stand operations and protocols.
- Some overnight travel is required; less than 10%.
What you will bring:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Applied Sciences and at least 3 years of compressor development or engineering Lab experience is required; OR
- Master's Degree in Engineering or Applied Sciences and at least 1 year of compressor development or engineering Lab experience is required.
Preferred Skills or Competencies:
- Proficient in understanding and application of electrical systems ranging from 24 VDC to 480 VAC.
- Demonstrated expertise and hands-on experience in PLC hardware and wiring.
- Extensive experience in diagnosing and resolving issues related to electrical systems and PLCs.
- Experience with VFD programming.
- Exhibit innovative thinking and creativity in developing upgrades and solutions.
- Possess extensive expertise in designing experimental facilities, encompassing mechanical, electrical, and controls design.
- Excellent Understanding of the HVAC cycle and related heat transfer/thermodynamic concepts.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and exceptional written and verbal communication abilities to interface effectively across various functions.
- Must possess a high level of motivation and demonstrate strong team collaboration skills.
- Demonstrated ability to creatively solve complex problems.
- Process driven with strong attention to detail for external agency tests.
Compensation:
Annual Pay Range: $65,000 - $123,000
