Job Summary:

The Controls Engineering and Programming Center (CEPC) is an Engineering and Programming Center of Excellence configured with a North America (NA) Engineering Team Leader located in North America, responsible for a team located in one of two CEPC engineering centers. The position is a technical leadership role, that is responsible for acting as a subject matter expert with historical and proprietary knowledge of Trane controls and capabilities, drawing on many years of experience as a Trane controls engineer. The role is also responsible for acquisition of work, customer coordination, engineering quality control, technical mentorship of controls engineers, project scheduling and distribution of workload to their team based on experience.

Where is the work: 

This position has been designated as a Hybrid work schedule with work performed onsite 3 days each week. Remote work will be considered for the right candidate. 


What you will do: 

  • Project Engineering and Design:
    • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) with regards to all design aspects of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and Building Automation Systems (BAS)
    • Review all project documentation, including plans, specifications, submittals, or other documents for accuracy and completeness prior to assigning projects to their team
    • Generate and draft Requests for Information (RFI) as needed to resolve inconsistencies in project documentation prior to assigning projects to their team
    • Provide experience-based guidance and knowledge of Trane systems, and their proprietary capabilities, during all stages of project design to their team members
    • Provide direction and solutions to Trane local sales offices as an expert resource in all aspects of control systems design
    • Assisting the Trane local sales teams and leadership with technical concerns posed in the contracting and design process by Mechanical Contractors, General Contractors, or any other external third-party
    • Develop Sequence of Operations and system designs for the development of projects for all team members
    • Provide expert knowledge and solutions to all team members for Trane system capabilities and design during project development
    • Provide expert knowledge and solutions to all team members for all network designs, system communication architecture, system controllers, and unitary controller wiring diagrams
    • Provide expert knowledge and solutions to all team members for proper selection of sensors (Temperature, Humidity, Occupancy, etc.) and end devices (Valves, Actuators, Dampers, Relays, etc.)
    • Develop and mentor their team members in all areas of design for HVAC and BAS systems, in effort to communicate and transmit expert knowledge to junior level team members
    • Assign and distribute workload to their team members using experience-based knowledge to determine best-fit for assignment
    • Provide recommended improvements to the engineering process and development of individual engineers based on experience or expertise
    • As a subject matter expert, conduct final reviews of all projects to ensure design standards, system functionality and proper device selections are applied. Provide feedback to all team members.
  • Maintain the team:
    • Providing co-leadership in conjunction with the Team Supervisor, administrating work direction and quality control for the successful fulfillment of controls contracting projects
    • Provide experience-based feedback for hiring processes of new engineers when needed
    • Driving CEPC retention and maintaining headcount requirements through Employee Engagement initiatives and CEPC hiring goals
    • Technical leadership of a high-performing engineering team: 
    • Reviewing and ensuring that the CEPC standards are being maintained through intermittent process reviews 
    • Review monthly performance statistics and reports with CEPC Leadership, teams or individuals as needed
    • Report and advise on any necessary issues to the CEPC Leadership
    • Develop PDC goals and conduct annual performance reviews in accordance with PDC requirements
    • Conduct CEPC Engineering Level reviews for all accepted team members via evaluations provided by NA leads, Team Supervisors, or any additionally obtained input
    • Assigning, directing, and evaluating any applicable CEPC member’s work, and overseeing the development of staff competency, including New Hire progress
    • Maintaining historical CEPC data for accuracy and accessibility by CEPC leadership for all performance metrics
    • Communicating and presenting CEPC performance data via reports generated monthly, quarterly, or annually
  • Team Coordination:
    • Conferring with CEPC management, other NA Leads, and Team Supervisors to discuss project concerns, identifying opportunities for process improvement, or developing new organizational procedures.
    • Communicating and identifying opportunities or situations for reward, development, or disciplinary actions for all applicable CEPC members
    • Supporting other Engineering Team Supervisors, engineering processes, scheduling and team functions through technical guidance or leadership mentoring as needed
    • Coaching and Developing Others:
    • Identifying the developmental needs of others and coaching, mentoring, or otherwise helping others to improve their knowledge or skills.
    • Assist Team Supervisors or individuals with evaluating performance needs or corrective actions needed to support highest quality initiatives and performance concerns
    • Coaching team members on career path development through identifying opportunities of career growth, knowledge, or training events
    • Communicating with leaders or individuals outside of CEPC Organization:
    • Demonstrating effective communication with people outside the CEPC group as a representative of CEPC to any Regional Trane Sales Offices, Consultant Engineers, Trane Product Teams, National Accounts, Federal Team, Third-party equipment vendors, Trane-supported vendors (LAR and NA), etc. This information may be exchanged in person, in writing, by telephone, or e-mail. 
  • Communicating with Supervisors or Peers:
    • Providing information to direct managers, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, video conference, or in person.
    • Reporting team or individual concerns to CEPC Manager or applicable members
    • Participate in all CEPC team meetings as required 
    • Conducting meetings on a regular basis to provide direct communication to the team
  • Establishing and Maintaining NA Regional Relationships:
    • Developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with NA Leads and maintaining them over time to drive growth within CEPC.
    • Perform administrative functions such as reviewing and writing reports, approving expenditures, enforcing rules, and making decisions about the purchase of materials or services.
    • Internal team support for project management of large scale projects
    • Develop and implement policies, standards and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed in the department.
    • Assist with reviewing project documents and conducting job surveys
    • Maintains customer satisfaction by investigating concerns, implementing corrective action, communication with staff, providing customer feedback and solutions.
    • Flexibility to work outside normal work hours/weekends, as required.
    • Available to travel up to 25% (including International travel, as needed).
    • Special tasks, as assigned.


What you will bring: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field of study preferred; with a minimum of five (5) years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and engineering drawing tools.  Proficient computer skills are required.  Mastery in the concepts of HVAC controls in new construction, renovation/retrofit project types, components, and systems. Proven performance and competencies within CEPC roles, or from a similarly held position, are required. Demonstrated ability and/or experience in prior positions, including:
  • Ability to lead a team and find solutions to problems related to the Engineering Center
  • Consistently demonstrated ability to mentor individuals
  • Proven ability to work with all levels of individuals in a construction project life cycle
  • Complete tasks and assignments independently or with minimal guidance in a timely manner
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in the use of Trane engineering tools 
  • Comprehend, discuss, apply, and mentor peers in new concepts in the HVAC controls industry
  • Read, analyze, and interpret plans, specifications, contract documents, control drawings or other documents 
  • Interpret and/or develop Sequence of Operations, wiring diagrams, and HVAC system schematics
  • Draft reports and business correspondence  
  • Effectively present and/or respond to questions from customers and team members
  • Ensure team output of high-quality work and/or services in a fast-paced environment

Compensation:   

Total target compensation - $80,000 to $120,000

Total compensation for this role will include an incentive plan. Disclaimer: This base pay range is based on US national averages. Actual base pay could be a result of seniority, merit, geographic location where the work is performed.
