We are hiring a Senior Engineer, System Integration and Optimization, within the Electrical Systems and Components (ES&C) Network of Excellence in our global Corporate Advanced Technologies organization.  Our organization’s role is to identify, develop, deliver, and deploy leading-edge technologies to our businesses that enable product and service growth and enhancement.

 

As a Senior Engineer, you will play an important role in leading and developing key technologies to enable further adaptation of electric systems in Trane Technologies’ HVAC+R global systems and accelerate electrification of the portfolio. This position will directly support key enterprise initiatives of electrification and decarbonization to meet sustainability goals of 1GT CO2e reductions by 2030. This role is expected to serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the electrical systems and components optimization, efficiency and reliability.   globally for the company. This role will Influence technical direction through external partners, relationships, and by demonstrating applicability of new tech in the product portfolio. The role will also be to manage and contribute technically to key strategic projects.

This position is eligible for a Hybrid work schedule (3 or more days onsite a week) and will be based out of our Davidson, NC or Bloomington, MN office location.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the digital initiatives for equipment.  A domain expert in using sensors and edge data gathering to improve performance and optimization of our products at the component level.  Knowledge of data science hierarchy and how data is collected and fed into the TT pipeline for the data science teams usage in condition based monitoring.
  • Influence design of power electronic conversion components and their applications to systems to electrify and enhance our products
  • Lead internal technology forums, participate in Design Reviews, test readiness reviews, and provide control advice for major projects within multiple SBUs.
  • Evaluate the performance of electrical and electronic sub-systems, and systems. Collaborate with other teams to develop and implement hardware design, improvements, and solutions to optimize for smart systems.
  • Support power component testing in a laboratory setting using the variety of electronics test equipment. Drive engagement with external 3rd party test laboratories, as needed. Author lab test plans, conduct testing, analyze and interpret results and execute design updates based on the results.
  • Investigate test discrepancies and anomalies and perform failure investigations using modeling or otherwise. Troubleshoot issues from board to system level, providing practical, workable solutions for key projects. Support root cause analysis for field issues and perform data reduction of complex analysis.
  • Lead advanced technology strategic projects, enabling Predictive Maintenance and health monitoring of electrical systems and components. Develop new and nurture existing external partnerships in the domain area of system integration, EMI/EMC, and reliability.
  • Network across the organization to identify and communicate opportunities to assess and apply next gen technology to product/services portfolio.
  • Develop project plans, prioritize tasks, and provide regular project updates.
  • Travel~10%

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in electrical, electronic engineering or related field. Master’s degree and/or PhD is preferred.
  • 3+ years’ experience in systems requirements, analysis, design, and test experience, motor drives, DCDC converters, ACDC converters, , magnetics, and filters.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of performing electrical components tests.
  • Experience with test software and equipment (e.g., power meter, spectrum analyzer, signal generator) along with evaluating customer and operational needs to define and coordinate cross-functional system performance requirements, ensuring compatibility of all physical and functional interfaces.
  • Experience with Simulation software, i.e. PLECs / SPICE and an understanding of Electrical system reliability concerns, failure modes, and corresponding avoidance/detection strategies.
  • Highly capable of performing independently and/or coordinating group efforts for complex, advanced engineering tasks.
  • Six Sigma belt, black belt preferred

Key Competencies:

  • Minimum:
    • Demonstrated capability to lead technical projects as a technology expert in the specified area, also providing key technical inputs to other teams.
    • Ability to drive requirements solicitation and decomposition to optimize design.
    • Leverage existing and disclose new  intellectual property.
    • Good understanding of relevant agency standards, regulations and best practices.
    • Experience with circuit simulation tools to screen out potential system interaction issues.  Examples are PLECs, Dymola, SPICE
    • Proficient in using test equipment such as dynamometer, oscilloscopes spectrum analyzers and power meters, etc., following the industry test standards.
    • Experience with prototyping, testing, modeling, and validating power electronic converters and their applications. Using multiple different types of power sources and different loads.
    • Six sigma robust design.  Able to conduct Design Of Experiments and statistical analysis
  • Desired:
    • Experience and familiarity working in a research-oriented environment.  Able to realize solutions using commercially viable components to accelerate development.
    • Professional experience of leading, mentoring or coaching other employees or teams.

Base Pay Range: $110,000 - $130,000
