This Systems Design Engineer will be a member of our Trane Commercial Systems organization and be responsible for all aspects of equipment design and component integration for Trane Commercial Water-to-Water Heat Pump product lines, encompassing both heating and cooling functionalities. This includes modeling system performance, innovating new technology for future products, validating ideas and system performance in the laboratory. This role interacts with other functional resource groups to support product design and integration, such as Compressor Engineering, Thermal Systems Engineering, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineer, Manufacturing, etc. To be successful, this Systems Design Engineer will need to collaborate closely with teams located in La Crosse, WI along with support organizations located in Shanghai, China and Bangalore, India.

This position is eligible for a Hybrid work schedule (1-2 days remote; 3-4 days on-site).


Core Job Responsibilities (others may be added):

  • Apply engineering knowledge to perform Heat Pump Performance Modeling to simulate and predict unit performance.
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks in the system design and development process, and develop and implement effective risk mitigation plans.
  • Develop products that provide innovative solutions to existing heat pump applications and expand product offerings that solve the future of heating application needs.
  • Help conduct new technology and new product development projects to improve the function, reliability, or cost of products and components.
  • Help develop and improve tools and processes used for the design and integration of new components within our Commercial HVAC product lines for both heating and cooling.
  • Perform and document engineering analysis required to design, verify performance, and reliability of HVAC components and products.
  • Plan and direct laboratory tests to support product design, verification, and work with suppliers to obtain component designs that meet product requirements.
  • Support field and factory system problem resolution.
  • Work effectively across functional lines (development, production, design, marketing, suppliers)
  • Overnight travel (less than 10%).


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (or related technical discipline) and at least 2-years of engineering work experience is required.
  • Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
  • Master's Degree in Engineering is a plus.


Essential Skills or Competencies:

  • Understanding of HVAC system, technologies and components including refrigeration, heat transfer, and airflow.
  • Must be proficient in problem solving with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to efficiently understand, condense, and organize information necessary to make engineering decisions along with having the ability to be coached and mentored by senior employees.
  • Experience with product design, bill of materials, engineering specifications, and product manufacturing.
  • Have a quality and customer service orientation towards engineering design.
  • Resilient team player with the dual ability to work as a team player or a team leader.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others both written and orally.
  • Be a self-starter with a high energy level and a high commitment to career.
  • Ability to make progress by producing deliverables and completing projects in a multi-tasking environment.
  • Design or application experience with HVAC products, thermodynamic computations, pressure vessel design, compressor, motor, controls, or heat transfer technologies and understanding of Data & Analytics, making data driven decisions and programming knowledge is a plus.


    Salary Range: $72,000 to $125,000 annually
